Emerging Intermediate: My Art and My World

(Grades 3 – 5)

This instructional level is one of transition. Children begin to become independent thinkers, are self-motivated, and are ready for new artistic challenges. Students develop a global understanding of self and the world. Artistic ability is further developed through directed exploration of studio media using the formal qualities of art. Students begin to critically consider their work and the work of others in both verbal and written form.

Developmentally Appropriate Entry Level Skills

These are required for successful participation in Emerging Intermediate Level: My Art and My World, and are the Culminating Artistic Behaviors from Primary Level: My Art, All About Me.

The elementary art student had the proficient ability to:

  • Identify and utilize the formal qualities of art.
  • Select and use tools appropriately.
  • Discuss characteristics of artworks, including one’s own, works from various cultures and the works of master artists.
  • Apply a schema using different processes and a variety of media to tell a story.

Course Goal: for RESPONDING

Develop the ability to make artistic choices that are reflective and informed.

Objectives:

  1. Use art vocabulary to describe visual relationships within artworks and in one’s world.
  2. Reflect upon the work of master artists and select ideas to communicate personal meaning in a work of art.
  3. Apply an understanding of visual relationships in a composition or art object. Follows visual, oral, and written directions to solve a visual art problem.

Course Goal: for EXPRESSING

Develop a personal strategy to solve an art problem in a meaningful way.

Objectives:

  1. Use the combination of personal experiences and observation to add detail and signify importance within an artwork.
  2. Combine knowledge of materials and technical processes to make informed personal decisions in the art making process.
  3. Sketches preliminary ideas.
  4. Develops visual solutions using the formal qualities of art to achieve a design principle.
  5. Develop compositions that include elaboration of imagery to expand the schema.

Art Discipline Objectives:

Drawing — Apply drawing techniques to represent forms in the environment.

Painting — Use painting techniques and color groups/schemes to represent a personal experience in a composition.

Printmaking — Use printmaking processes to transfer imagery.

Sculpture — Construct a form in relief or in the round.

Crafts — Combine processes and media in the production of aesthetically functional objects.

Culminating Artistic Behaviors

When transitioning from the Emerging Intermediate Level to the Intermediate Level, the elementary art student works towards proficiency:

  • Use a variety of media to reflect personal decisions and experiences.
  • Follow a multi-step process to solve an art problem.
  • Incorporate observed form with schema.
  • Make choices during the art making process that are reflective and informed.

Primary: My Art – All About Me

(Grades 1 – 2)

Children’s artistic behaviors are developed through directed exploration of tools, techniques, the formal qualities of art, and master exemplars. This fosters a sense of self that is encouraged within the artist using memory, observation, imagination, or narrative. Through a variety of media experiences, students are lead on a journey toward finding a place in their perception of the world.

These are required for successful participation in Primary Level: My Art, All About Me, and are the Culminating Artistic Behaviors from Pre-K/K: Art as Discovery. The elementary art student had the proficient ability to:

  • Share personal experiences and ideas visually.
  • Use basic art vocabulary to describe their work and the artwork of others.
  • Describe and recognize master and cultural exemplars.
  • Be aware of one’s self and the world around them.
  • Use art as play.

* These skills may not be apparent with those students who have not had a Pre-K/K art experience.

Course Goal: for RESPONDING

Develop an ability to identify, describe, compare, and contrast artworks to develop a personal statement.

Objectives:

  1. Identify and describe characteristics of artworks and the environment (or the world around them).
  2. Compare and contrast artworks, objects and their environment.
  3. Recognize characteristics that are alike and different among objects, environments, and art works.

Course Goal: for EXPRESSING

Demonstrate an ability to communicate visually using a variety of tools, techniques, formal qualities of art, and schema.

Objectives:

  1. Use a variety of tools and techniques to apply the formal qualities of art.
  2. Develop and use personal schema in a series of art-making experiences.
  3. Describe and apply the formal qualities of art.
  4. Incorporate schema into a compositional format.
  5. Use strategies in making art that draw upon memory, observation, imagination, and narrative.

Painting — Use painting as a vehicle to make pictures, and as a way to identify and mix color.

Crafts — can be aesthetic, functional, and personal.
